The 5th Contest in 2001, themed as Erkunshen Fortress, organized by Southern Taiwan University of Technology
Eternal Golden Castle is used to be call Erkunshen Cannon Platform or Sankunshen Cannon Platform. It was the first modern, Westernized cannon platform, and also the first to equip with Armstrong cannons. The use of such cannons was a milestone in the cannon history of southern and northern Taiwan. The establishment of the fortress was to battle against the invading Japanese because of the Mudanshe Incident. Then the emperor messenger Shen Pao-Jheng was ordered to attend to defense and negotiation affairs in Taiwan. Shen thus applied for the construction of the cannons to defend ports and cities. Because the cannon platforms were located on the sand land, the access and transportation of construction material were hard to get, therefore, it was said that construction workers used bricks of An-Ping Castle to build the platform. The whole construction was finished in 1876, though it didn't help much to the incident, it had performed well and fought back enemies in wars against the French and the Japanese in 1884 and 1895.
